Resnik's Master Facility Plan
The character and charm of the existing building, so valued by
the community, is reflected in a new, single-story school
similar in scale, proportion and massing. The more efficient
layout incorporates today’s technology for a better learning
environment. The new school integrates beloved attributes of the
old building, including face brick, asphalt shingles, arches and
window types, with a contemporary learning facility. Common
areas such as the gym, music room, art room, media center and
student dining are centralized. The public can use these spaces
after hours, and classroom wings can be locked for safety and
privacy.
The new school is located
in the approximate location of the
old building, closer to Meadowcroft Drive. The safer site
has a playground and playfields to the west. A portion of Meadowcroft
was vacated, with the bulk of parking placed east of the new
building. An
exclusive drop-off and pick-up area is situated in front of
the building, looping back toward the remaining portion of Meadowcroft
on the east portion of the site. Meadowcroft is interrupted
in the middle of the property, removing the barrier that
currently separates the front green space from the school and
outdoor play areas, separating vehicular from
pedestrian traffic. No student will have to cross a road to get
to a play area. A new traffic light and crosswalk were placed
at Market Street.
Architects
All designs are the work of an architectural firm from one of
six firms which comprise the Akron Architectural Group. AAG
architects work with Akron Public Schools architects on each
site. The architectural firm that designed the Judith A. Resnik Community
Learning Center was Hasenstab Architects. Fred Herr was the Akron Public
Schools liaison.
