David Hill's Master Facility Plan
The new David Hill CLC creates an inviting educational
environment for students and the community. The 2.71-acre site
is located between Archwood and Austin avenues, east of Erskine
Avenue. The new building forms a sweeping "J" shape, with the
main entrance inside the curve. Visitors enter David Hill from
Archwood as a colonnade of trees line the drive. A sloping roof
opens up at the main entrance. Stairs are full-height,
glass-enclosed and adjacent to the entry.
The
two-story classroom wing includes larger kindergarten rooms,
which protrude beyond the second floor and have curved exterior
walls and higher ceilings. The roof slopes at the classrooms,
administrative area, media center and band room. The classroom
wing is secured from the entry lobby, allowing community access
to the art and band rooms, media center, gymnasium, and
cafetorium after school hours. The new David Hill includes a
gearless elevator, sized for handicapped access.
David Hill
was built in the southeast corner to maximize play areas and
parking. The building, parking, playgrounds and play field are close by. The playground and play field are located along
Archwood. Retaining walls run east to west and north along
Archwood. Residential properties line the north and south, while
a combination of commercial and residential properties line the
east.
Architects
All designs are the work of an
architectural firm from one of six firms, which comprise the
Akron Architectural Group. AAG architects work with Akron Public
Schools architects on each site. The architectural firm
that designed the David Hill Community Learning
Center was TC Architects. Gary
Reyna was the Akron Public Schools liaison.
